Serie A vote against reduction in number of clubs

The Serie A teams decided to maintain the current 20-club format for the Italian top division, as announced by Lega Serie A following their shareholders’ meeting in Milan.

Just four teams, including Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan, and AS Roma, supported the proposal to reduce the number of clubs in Serie A to 18. However, the majority of clubs voted to keep the number at 20, as it has been since the 2004/05 season. The top teams had advocated for the reduction to decrease the number of games and improve the quality of football, but they needed at least 14 votes to pass the reform.

A set of reforms has been given the green light and will be put forward at the Italian Football Federation’s (FIGC) Extraordinary General Assembly in March. The Italian league is advocating for increased independence from the FIGC, mirroring the structure of the Premier League in England.

“Currently, the system does not give Serie A the autonomy and decision-making weight it should have with respect to economic weight,” Lega President Lorenzo Casini said after a meeting of the clubs last week.
