Premier League: Tottenham vs Brentford Live

Preview

After being eliminated from the FA Cup last week, Tottenham will resume their Premier League schedule on Wednesday by facing London rivals Brentford. While Brentford were on their mid-season break, Spurs suffered a home defeat to Manchester City in their last match and are now aiming for their first league victory of 2024.

Tottenham had previously won all five of their encounters at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against their opponents, but last week they were defeated by Man City in the FA Cup, ending their winning streak. The late goal by Nathan Ake secured the victory for Man City, leaving Spurs to focus solely on the Premier League as they continue to pursue a top-four spot. Despite their 16-year silverware drought, Spurs are determined to stay competitive in the league, especially with challengers like Manchester United. Although they were shut out by City, Spurs have maintained a scoring streak in their last 33 top-flight matches, marking their longest streak in the club’s history and the fourth-best run in the Premier League era.

After suffering a defeat in their initial Premier League encounter with Spurs in late 2021, Brentford has managed to remain undefeated in their last four matches, including a 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in May. Similar to their upcoming opponents, Brentford was recently eliminated from the FA Cup after a replay against Wolverhampton Wanderers, following a 1-1 draw in their initial match. The return of their key player Ivan Toney, who had been serving a suspension, brought much excitement as he led the team to victory in their recent league match against Nottingham Forest, ending a five-game losing streak.

Despite their recent struggles, Brentford secured a win with Toney’s opening goal, supported by goals from Ben Mee and Neal Maupay. However, they have faced difficulties in their away games, losing all of their last four Premier League matches on the road. Additionally, after an impressive 14-match unbeaten run in London derbies, they have suffered two consecutive losses, falling 1-0 to Arsenal and 3-1 to Crystal Palace. With their position near the relegation zone, Brentford’s manager Thomas Frank aims to break these streaks by defeating Spurs on Wednesday.

Head-to-head

Last August, there was an eventful 2-2 draw between these two teams at Gtech Community Stadium. Three out of the last six matches between these rivals ended in a draw.

Bryan Mbeumo scores the first goal from the penalty spot for Brentford during the Premier League match between Brentford and Tottenham at Gtech Community Stadium on August 13, 2023.
Brentford’s Mbeumo scores first goal from penalty spot in Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Prediction

A changed Spurs team is expected to face Brentford after their quiet loss to Manchester City. Since Brentford typically struggles when playing away, Tottenham has the opportunity to earn a full three points.
