Mauricio Pochettino the head coach / manager of Chelsea during the Premier League match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea FC at Molineux on December 24, 2023 in Wolverhampton, England.

Pochettino Blames Lack of Experience for Chelsea’s Poor Discipline

Chelsea’s manager Mauricio Pochettino attributed the team’s league-leading 56 yellow cards to a lack of experience. This was mentioned before a Premier League match against Crystal Palace, where key players Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer were suspended.

Nicolas Jackson, Malo Gusto, Connor Gallagher, Marcus Bettinelli, Sterling, and Palmer all received yellow cards during Chelsea’s 2-1 loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Sterling and Palmer received their fifth yellow cards of the season, which means they will be unavailable for Wednesday’s home match against Palace. When asked if Chelsea’s difficulties in managing their players were due to a lack of discipline within the team, Pochettino informed the press that it was not the case. He explained that it is a reflection of the high expectations and pressure that come with playing for a big club like Chelsea.

“When you are frustrated and lack a bit of experience, it’s (something) we can improve. It’s Palmer’s first season in the Premier League and it is normal.

“He is playing for Chelsea. Of course, it’s frustrating. But the players care, the players want to win. It’s not about a lack of discipline, it’s about having the ability to read the situation of the game.”

Chelsea, who are currently in 10th place, will play against Crystal Palace at home before heading to Luton Town on Saturday.
