NBA Roundup: Tyrese Maxey drops 50 as 76ers defeat Pacers

Tyrese Maxey scored a career-high 50 points, while Joel Embiid contributed 37 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 137-126 win over the Indiana Pacers on Sunday evening.

Tyrese Maxey scored 20 out of 32 field goals, with 7 out of 11 coming from 3-point range, leading the 76ers to their eighth consecutive win. His total points surpassed his previous career high of 44 points, achieved during Philadelphia’s 112-90 victory against Toronto on October 28, 2022.

Maxey finished his scoring spree with a step-back 3-pointer with 1:05 left in the fourth quarter. He ended the game with seven rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. Embiid showcased his seventh consecutive double-double by scoring 19 points in the opening quarter. The current NBA MVP completed 12 of 26 field goals and 12 of 14 free throws. Tyrese Haliburton of Indiana achieved his eighth double-double in nine games with 25 points and 17 assists. Myles Turner scored 22 points and Buddy Hield contributed 16 points as a substitute for the Pacers, ending their three-game winning streak.

Grizzlies 105, Clippers 101

Desmond Bane scored 27 points and Memphis managed to withstand a strong comeback from Los Angeles to secure a win. Memphis held an 11-point advantage going into the final quarter, but the Clippers made a strong comeback, evening the score at 84-84 with a 3-pointer from Paul George at 6:38 remaining. The teams then exchanged points and were tied at 98-98 with 1:33 left after James Harden made a shot from long range.

However, the Grizzlies secured a five-point lead with three free throws and a layup from David Roddy, which they maintained until the end of the game. Bane scored 10 out of 24 shots and contributed six assists for Memphis, securing their second win of the season. George led Los Angeles with 26 points, but the team’s record dropped to 0-4 with Harden, who scored 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting.

Mavericks 136, Pelicans 124

Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic combined for 65 points to lead Dallas to a dominant victory over New Orleans. The Mavericks were also supported by Tim Hardaway Jr. with 15 points, Josh Green with 13, and Dereck Lively II with 10. They held a commanding lead of up to 29 points before the Pelicans’ bench players narrowed the gap towards the end. Rookie Bilal Coulibaly, who previously played with Victor Wembanyama in France, led the Wizards with a career-high 20 points, including a crucial 3-pointer that put Washington ahead for the first time at 85-82 with 6:44 remaining.

Bulls 119, Pistons 108

DeMar DeRozan scored 29 points as Chicago defeated Detroit, who suffered their eighth consecutive loss. Nikola Vucevic contributed 21 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists, while Zach LaVine added 19 points. The Bulls have emerged victorious in 16 of their last 17 matchups against the Central Division teams. Kevin Knox II led Detroit with 18 points, marking his return to the franchise after signing as a free agent. Cade Cunningham had a season-low 10 points on 4-of-15 shooting. The Pistons’ last win was against the Bulls on October 28.

Rockets 107, Nuggets 104

Fred VanVleet achieved his highest scoring performance of the season with 26 points, while Alperen Sengun contributed 23 points as Houston secured their sixth consecutive victory against Denver. The team’s bench players also contributed 31 points, supporting VanVleet and Sengun. In a thrilling matchup, Sengun also recorded eight rebounds and five assists, while contending with Nikola Jokic, who achieved his fourth triple-double of the season with 36 points, 21 rebounds, and 11 assists.

Despite Jokic’s impressive performance, Houston managed to hold on for a narrow 103-102 win, with VanVleet sealing the victory with two free throws. Additionally, Michael Porter Jr. scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Nuggets, while Aaron Gordon contributed 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
