Preview: Liverpool vs Tottenham

Liverpool vs Tottenham is set to take place at Anfield on Sunday at 3:30pm. Jurgen Klopp’s team may witness their chances of winning the title come to an end this weekend, while Tottenham Hotspur are on the brink of being knocked out of their Champions League quest with just one more loss.

With just three games remaining in Jürgen Klopp’s tenure at Liverpool, the German will face the Kop with a sense of sadness on Sunday. Both their Premier League and European aspirations have been shattered since their last home game. Despite a victory in the second leg against Atalanta, Liverpool’s exit from the Europa League was confirmed.

This was followed by a painful 2-0 defeat to Everton in the Merseyside derby and a 2-2 draw with West Ham, effectively ending their chances of winning the league title. However, there is a silver lining for the Reds as they have secured a spot in next season’s Champions League after Tottenham failed to defeat Chelsea. Despite recent struggles, Liverpool has a strong home record in the Premier League, having lost only two of their 31 home matches (winning 20 and drawing 9).

This is a challenging situation for Spurs to address, especially as they are currently on a three-game losing streak. Their performance in important matches has been lacking, as seen in their recent losses in London derbies against Arsenal and Chelsea. Despite their recent struggles, there is still a possibility for them to secure a top-four position. However, many believe that their role in the season’s final stages may be more about influencing the title race, as they are set to face Liverpool and Manchester City in May. Their upcoming match against Liverpool could potentially end the latter’s title hopes and mark Spurs’ first league double over them since the 2010/11 season.

Head-to-head

Liverpool has won two out of their last five matches against Spurs, with one loss and two draws. In their most recent encounter earlier this season, Liverpool suffered a 2-1 defeat.

Diogo Jota scores the fourth goal making the score 4-3 during the Liverpool vs Tottenham Premier League match at Anfield on April 30, 2023.

Prediction

With little time to recover, constantly at risk from set pieces and witnessing their key players struggle during a critical part of the season, Tottenham’s chances of finishing in the top four could be dashed at Anfield. Despite Klopp’s underperforming team, their ability to secure 28 points from losing positions should not be underestimated. Fueled by a sense of injustice from September, we believe that the home team will return to winning form, even if it may not have a significant impact.
