Premier League: Liverpool vs Manchester City Live

Preview: Liverpool vs Manchester City

Liverpool vs Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday at 3:45pm will be the last time that Jurgen Klopp’s reds will face Pep’s Citizens in the Premier League before Klopp leaves in the summer. The two teams are currently separated by just one point in the standings after 27 games of the 2023-24 season, with Arsenal having the potential to move both teams down a spot before the big game on Sunday.

The reds secured a crucial victory in the Premier League with a late goal from Darwin Nunez, making it their 10th latest winning goal in the history of the competition. The Reds currently hold the top spot, but controversy arose as the referee made a questionable decision in awarding the winning goal. Despite this, the reds celebrated their one-point lead over Manchester City. However, they could lose their position if Arsenal wins their upcoming match. Liverpool also achieved a dominant victory in the Europa League against Sparta Prague, marking their seventh consecutive win across all competitions. Their strong performance at home has seen them undefeated in 29 straight matches.

Manchester City, who have been in impressive form, have every reason to believe they can spoil the reds home record. Despite conceding first against Manchester United, City bounced back with goals from Phil Foden (two) and Erling Haaland. The reds still have a Europa League match to play before they can secure progression, while City have already advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals with a 6-2 aggregate win over Copenhagen. City have won 16 of their last 17 matches, including their last five, and are on a 10-game winning streak away from home since their loss to Aston Villa in December.

Head-to-head

Earlier this season, Manchester City and Liverpool played to a 1-1 draw at Etihad Stadium, extending Man City’s unbeaten streak against Liverpool to three matches since their 1-0 loss in the same fixture last season. However, Liverpool has only lost once in their last 20 Premier League home games against Man City. That defeat was a 4-1 loss in February 2021.

Prediction

Despite Liverpool’s strong performance at Anfield this season, they are facing challenges such as injuries and a short recovery time from a recent away game in Europe. Even with a strong lineup, they gave up many scoring opportunities to Sparta Prague. Due to Liverpool’s tendency to concede goals at home, Manchester City, with a perfect away record in 2024 and fresher players, are favored to take advantage of Liverpool’s fatigue. This could prevent Klopp from having an undefeated season at home and potentially shift the balance of the Premier League title race.
