The NBA Playoffs is a yearly competition that concludes the National Basketball Association’s season. It includes the Play-In tournament, the First Round, the Conference Semifinals, the Conference Finals, and the NBA Finals. Each stage of the Playoffs spans two weeks, and the entire playoffs last for eight weeks. Typically, the playoffs commence in mid-April and conclude in mid-June. The playoffs feature the top eight teams from both the Eastern and Western conferences, with teams from each conference competing to eliminate one another until the final teams from each conference face off in the finals.

NBA Play-In Tournament

The NBA Play-In Tournament is a competition involving eight teams that decides the seventh and eighth seeds in each conference for the NBA Playoffs. It was introduced to provide an opportunity for the ninth and tenth-place teams in each conference to qualify for the playoffs. Although it is separate from the regular season and playoffs, many fans view it as the beginning of postseason basketball in the NBA.

The Play-In tournament involves the teams ranked seventh to tenth in each conference. The seventh and eighth ranked teams face off, as do the ninth and tenth ranked teams. The winner of the 7/8 game secures the seventh spot in the playoffs. The loser of the 9/10 game is eliminated, while the winner faces the loser of the 7/8 game. The winner of that match claims the eighth spot in the playoffs.

First Round

In each conference, there are four sets of games, with each set consisting of seven games. The team that wins four out of the seven games in each set moves on to the next round. In many cases, all seven games are not necessary as one team wins four games before reaching game seven. The team with the superior record has the advantage of playing four out of the seven games at their home stadium.

In the first round, the games are as stated:

First seed against eighth seed, second seed against seventh seed, third seed against sixth seed, fourth seed against fifth seed.

Conference Semifinals

The NBA Playoffs Conference Semifinals mark the second stage of the playoffs. In this round, the victorious teams from the previous four matchups in each conference compete against each other in a best-of-seven series. The rules regarding home-court advantage still apply during the Conference Semifinals.

Conference Finals

The NBA Playoffs Conference Finals mark the third stage of the playoffs. During this round, the two remaining teams in each conference face off to determine the conference champion. The same rules regarding home-court advantage that apply in previous rounds also apply in the Conference Finals. The Conference Finals showcase the top teams from the Eastern and Western conferences, respectively. The team that emerges victorious in four out of the seven games in each Conference Final advances to the NBA Finals and has an opportunity to compete for the NBA Championship Title.

NBA Finals

The NBA Finals mark the ultimate stage of the playoffs and decide the ultimate victor, the NBA Champion, for the season. The regulations regarding home-court advantage also apply in the NBA Finals, and this advantage holds significant importance in the outcome of the Finals. The Finals consist of a series of seven games, and the team that secures four wins is declared the NBA Champion and presented with the Larry O’Brian Championship Trophy.
