Preview: Bayern vs Arsenal

Bayern vs Arsenal is scheduled for the Allianz Arena on Wednesday at 7:00pm as the gunners visit Munich for the second leg of their champions league quarter-final match. The first leg at the Emirates Stadium ended in a 2-2 draw, with Arsenal regretting some unusual errors. Despite playing without their fans in the away end, Bayern Munich managed to secure a hard-fought draw.

Bayern recently lost their 11-year hold on the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen, but they are aiming to salvage their season by pursuing success in Europe. Despite feeling frustrated about a missed penalty opportunity in the first leg match in London, Bayern remains confident after securing a draw. Their strong track record of success in two-legged ties after drawing the first leg away (winning 22, losing 3) and their impressive home record against English teams (winning 17, drawing 7 and losing 4) provide them with optimism. However, the home side has faced challenges in the quarter-finals historically, having been eliminated a record 13 times at this stage, including in the last three seasons.

The gunners may not be in a good position to capitalize on this opportunity after losing control of the Premier League due to a 2-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa. Mikel Arteta’s team will be eager to avoid any negative effects from that loss as they head east to try to overcome their past struggles against German teams, particularly Bayern Munich. Although Arsenal is in the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in 14 years, their historical record in this stage is not impressive (2 wins, 5 losses).

However, they have been performing well in European away matches recently, with only four losses in their last 21 games on the road (12 wins, 5 draws). This strong away record could motivate them to reach the semi-finals of the tournament for the first time since the 2008/09 season.

Head-to-head

Bayern Munich has had greater success against Arsenal in important matches during this decade. However, they have not won in their last three meetings with Arsenal, which included two friendly matches in 2017 and 2019. In the Champions League, Bayern Munich secured three separate 5-1 victories over Arsenal in 2015 and 2017.

Prediction

In the previous week’s first leg, Tuchel demonstrated exceptional tactical prowess as his team’s defenders, midfielders, and wingers dominated an Arsenal team that seemed inexperienced in such high-stakes European matches. Despite the gunners typically being strong defensively in away games, their recent lack of killer instinct and collapse in the second half against Villa raised concerns. With the home side having an extra day of rest, it is anticipated that Arsenal will be rudely awakened from their Champions League aspirations.
